Food: the key to a healthy bird

Birds love to eat, and your bird is accustomed to eating a variety of foods. Although your bird likes these different foods it is important to keep it on a maintenance diet. You can even use their favorite foods as rewards when teaching them new things.

Roudybush Maintenance Pellet is the staple of your bird's diet. There are different sizes of this pellet available for different sized birds. The size pellet your bird came home with is the proper size it should be eating. Roudybush Maintenance Pellets should be 85% of your bird's total diet.

The remaining 15% of your bird's diet should include fruits, vegetables, seeds, and treats. Some prepared food brands combine fruits and vegetables within their products. There are some mixes that requiring cooking before serving to your bird. When prepared ahead of time and frozen, this can be a great substitute when fresh vegetables are not available.

You can also feed a basic seed mix but only in moderation. Seeds to birds are like junk food to humans. They both have little nutritional value and tend to be high in fat. We recommend that no more than 2 to 4 tablespoons of a basic seed mix is offered in one day.

While there are so many types of food to feed your bird there are some particular items that are harmful to them. They include chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, avocado, and foods high in fat such as French fries.
